A Rare Set Review

Well we have been through the Mythics. Now it is time to take a look at the rares in a purely limited scenario (draft and sealed). As there are a fair few rares I will only be writing a sentence or two on each. Buckle up and lets go on a journey.

Disclaimer: All ratings are based on my thoughts on the card, so if you disagree with anything feel free to drop me message to discuss.

Aethergeode Miner

Aethergeode Miner
A powerful two drop with an ability to trigger Revolt at will. This card is strong in an aggressive beatdown deck or a deck using Revolt to its full potential. Rating: B+

Aethersphere Harvester

Aethersphere Harvester
At three generic mana it is easy to cast and when it enters the battlefield it gives itself enough energy to activate lifelink twice. What really makes this great is Crew 1 meaning a servo can crew this very strong card. Rating: A

Aethertide Whale

Aethertide Whale
This thing dodges all removal with its ability and a 6/4 flyer is a great bomb in limited. Rating: B+

Aid from the Cowl

Aid from the Cowl
An enchantment that gives you great card advantage if you have a good way to trigger revolt. If not this card will only trigger half the time but it is still advantage. If you can lose a permanent on turn five before casting this it will usually find you value. Rating: C+

Baral, Chief of Compliance

Baral, Chief of Compliance
Not as good in limited as he is in constructed because counter spells tend to be worse and you run less instant and sorcery spells. Rating: D+

Baral’s Expertise

Baral’s Expertise
The first of the Expertise cycle, this card is great. Bounce three creatures or artifacts to your opponents hand and play a four cmc spell for free. The value in this card is real. Rating: A

Battle at the Bridge

Battle at the Bridge
This card will kill a creature and gain you life. Solid removal. Rating B

Call for Unity

Call for Unity
If you can trigger revolt and get two or three counters on this card it will be absolutely devastating. If not you just have a five mana enchantment that doesn’t do anything at all. Rating: B-

Dark Intimations

Dark Intimations
There is no way you are triggering the second part of this spell which really sucks. The first ability isn’t even great when the opponent will most likely have multiple servos. Three colours as well. I guess drawing a card and returning a creature is fine. Rating: E

Disallow

Disallow
The best counter spell in a long time. Though counter spells aren’t usually great in limited. Feel free to chuck this in but don’t build a deck because of it. Rating: C

Freejam Regent

Freejam Regent
A flying beater with better firebreathing. This card can come down on turn four and fly to victory. Rating: A

Glint-Sleeve Siphoner

Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
A 2/1 two mana creature with menace that can draw you cards, if you have energy. Very solid. Rating: B+

Greenbelt Rampager

Greenbelt Rampager
A 3/4 that can come down on turn two is nothing to scoff at. This guy will be big at most points of the game. Rating: B

Greenwheel Liberator

Greenwheel Liberator
If you can trigger Revolt this is a turn two 4/3 which is very good. Though if you can’t trigger revolt it isn’t anything exciting. Rating: B-

Heroic Intervention

Heroic Intervention
A pretty cool combat trick that might help you out in a combat step or a pinch but without any power or toughness increase it may be lackluster. Rating: D+

Hope of Ghirapur

Hope of Ghirapur
What a fun card. I’d play this. If your opponent doesn’t have much flying and you can get a hit this means they will be taking a turn off. Rating: C but this card has won my heart. THOPTER TRIBAL

Inspiring Statuary

Inspiring Statuary
At the very worst it is a three mana card that taps for colourless mana to cast your non artifact spells. At the best it makes your non artifact spells super duper cheap. Rating: B-

Kari Zev, Skyship Raider

Kari Zev, Skyship Raider
Three power spread out over two bodies, one of which has first strike and menace. This card is seriously good. It also triggers Revolt when the monkey leaves. I know one guy that needs this in his monkey deck. Rating: A

Kari Zev’s Expertise

Kari Zev’s Expertise
Stealing a creature is cool, playing a free 2 cmc spell is cool. This card is cool. Rating: C+

Lifecrafter’s Bestiary

Lifecrafter’s Bestiary
The Pokedex, I mean Bestiary lets you scry 1 which filters and then lets you draw more. Great card advantage. Rating: B

Merchant’s Dockhand

Merchant’s Dockhand
Expensive ability and can’t even use itself to add to the count. Rating: D

Metallic Mimic

Metallic Mimic

Tribal drafting is difficult in this set. I have good hopes for this in standard and modern but in limited it isn’t as good. Rating: C-

Midnight Entourage

Midnight Entourage
A four mana 3/3 that draws you a card when it dies is good. You may buff a few Aetherborn as they have a few in black, so the +1+1 is worth looking at. Rating: B+

Oath of Ajani

Oath of Ajani
The planeswalker ability isn’t useful almost all of the time and putting counters can break  a board stall but isn’t amazing. Rating: C-

Peacewalker Colossus

Peacewalker Colossus
A vehicle that is hard to crew and is only useful when you have lots of other vehicles in your deck. Rating: D+

Pia’s Revolution

Pia’s Revolution
This could add value if you have lots of artifacts. Not sure how to rate this one so don’t take my word for it. Rating: C, maybe

Quicksmith Rebel

Quicksmith Rebel
If this card sticks around you can usually ping your opponent for two a turn or kill a creature. Bear in mind you need an artifact when this enters the battlefield to get the ability. Rating: C+

Quicksmith Spy

Quicksmith Spy
Drawing an extra card a turn is great. Rating: B

Release the Gremlins

Release the Gremlins
You will most likely be able to kill one to two artifacts with this and make two 2/2 gremlins. Rating: C+

Rishkar, Peema Renegade

Rishkar, Peema Renegade
In a worst case scenario he comes down as a 4/4 that can tap for mana. Very strong card. Rating: A-

Rishkar’s Expertise

Rishkar’s Expertise
This card will most likely draw you three cards and let you play any spell in your hand. Rating: A

Scrap Trawler

Scrap Trawler
In a deck with lots of artifacts this card is fine. If not it is still a 3/2 for three. Rating: D+

Secret Salvage

Secret Salvage
Only play this if your deck has four or five of the same non land card. Even then you may not play it. Rating: F

Solemn Recruit

Solemn Recruit
A three mana 2/2 double striker is great. It can also get bigger. Rating: A-

Spire of Industry

Spire of Industry
This card is solid. Play it if you have a few artifacts and are playing more than two colours. Rating: C

Sram, Senior Edificer

Sram, Senior Edificer
Probably won’t draw you a huge amount of cards but even if he gets you one he only cost you two mana. Rating: C

Sram’s Expertise

Sram’s Expertise
Making three servos and casting a three cmc spell is just great. Rating: A

Walking Ballista

Walking Ballista
The new Hangarback Walker? No, but it can ping players and creatures, so if you have a +1+1 counter theme then this seems strong. Rating: C+

Whir of Invention

Whir of Invention
If you have a great artifact to find then this card can be good. If not then it probably isn’t worth running. Rating: D+

Yahenni, Undying Partisan

Yahenni, Undying Partisan
This guy, I think, gets bigger if you kill your opponents creatures and also can become indestructible. Rating: B-

Yahenni’s Expertise

Yahenni’s Expertise
Even though it kills Yahenni (flavour fail) this card is strong. It kills most creatures in the set and lets you cast a spell for free. Rating: B+

Well those are my opinions. Have any thoughts on how I could be hideously wrong? Drop me a message, and stay tuned for my uncommon card review.
